This Month, Don’t Get Pushed Around

Dear NACEM members,

One of the main reasons I founded this organization was to help us mother entrepreneurs focus the power and influence we have over the economy and our local communities for good. Earlier this year my family suffered an ordeal that made me realize how delicate life is.

In January of 2007 my infant daughter became sick and required prescription medication. I administered the drug per instructions from the “pharmacist” and directions on the bottle only to find out days later that a grave mistake had occurred.

The so-called CVS pharmacist dishing out information was really a cashier with no medical certification and she had given me the wrong instrument to give the medicine. The instructions on the bottle only referred to a “dropper” no standardized measurements.

My small child had received several times the amount of medicine she was supposed to. The hours that followed were disastrous. My little girl was convulsing, vomiting, and in pain. I spent hours in the emergency room wondering what had gone wrong. All I had to comfort me was a half-apology from the CVS Pharmacy manager stating that there had been many “problems in the store” recently.

Of course the calls from the Risk Management department at CVS came. I couldn’t help but feel that they cared more about their image and liability than my daughter’s well being.

CVS Pharmacies are springing up all over the country. In my opinion, they are growing faster than their quality control methods. I urge you to be careful when using facilities.

And this message to CVS: Many businesses are under the false impression that they can get away with hurting families and not make amends. Despite the images of cattiness portrayed in the media, the mom community is close and we look out for each other. We tell one another what is safe, what isn’t, what products work, and what companies care about our families.

This month, as I continue my boycott against CVS Pharmacy, I urge you to stand up against any company that unfairly threatens your economic or physical well being. Don’t be afraid to make a stink!
